Notes about our Week

•We are learning to find math everywhere!  We looked at groups of objects and pictures to see where we could find the math.  We noticed that many numbers can be represented in a simple way (e.g., 3 Jack-o-lanterns had 6 eyes, 8 triangles).

•We read stories about being scared and made connections to our own lives.  We learned that when we are scared, we are in the yellow or red zone and may need help to get back to the green zone.

•We read a story about an alligator under our bed and built alligator traps.

•We cauldrons and strange ingredients to our dramatic play area and made our own “potions” and recipes.

•We learned a new paint technique.  We painted on one side of the paper and then folded it.  We were surprised to see that the paintings became symmetrical.

•We hiked along the Mill Race Trail.  We explored the leaves on the trail and used our identification guide to see how many different types of trees we could find on our trail.

How you can support your child’s learning

•As you go for a walk, look at the fall displays and decorations set up in front houses and stores.  Ask your child to find the math by looking for numbers of things.  See how many different numbers you can find.

•Your child has brought home a Stinger Reader.  These readers have been specially selected for your child’s ability.  Please read ask your child to read their book each night.

•If your child has a letter book, please read the letters as the sound.  Ask your child to identify the letter name and sound as they trace the letter on the cover.  Ask your child to point to the focus letter on each page (e.g., Show me where the __(letter c sound) is.). Ask them to use the pictures to help figure out what the word could be.  Draw their attention to the initial sound.

•If your child has a beginning reader, focus on the words that repeat throughout the book.  It is the repetition of these words that help children learn to read.  Please ask your child to point to the words as they read.  The unfamiliar word can be determined using the initial sound and the picture.

•If your child has a more advanced reader, they will be given instructions about what they need to do as they read.

Important Information

•We love volunteers!  If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, we would love to have a volunteer from 12-1:30 to read and play games with the children.  Please send an email if you are able and make sure that you have a valid police check that has been sent into the school office.

•We have a child in our class with a severe nut allergy.  (There are also several teachers and students in our school who have nut allergies).  Please ensure that you are sending nut free foods to school.  If your child consumes nuts, peanuts or peanut butter before coming to school, please ensure that they have brushed their teeth and washed their hands and face before coming to school.  “Wow Butter” and peanut butter alternatives will be not be permitted in the classroom.  Thank you for your cooperation in keeping school a safe place for all children.
