Notes about our week…

•Many of the children have been very interested in unicorns.  We read “Unicorn and Horse” and created our own game based on the story.

•We made our own unicorns and wrote about the characteristics of our unicorn.

•We practiced our high-frequency word songs that help us learn to read and write words that occur frequently (e.g., can, the, look, etc).

•We role played camping at the dramatic play centre by cooking over our pretend fire and singing campfire songs.  Thank you to those who sent in lamps, sleeping bags and tents to make this possible.

•We are learning that there are many ways to make numbers and read stories and acted them out to find all the ways to make these numbers (e.g., for the number five: 0+5; 1+4; 2+3; 3+2; 4+1; 5+0).

•Many children were researching animals and recording the information that they learned.

*We will be beginning an inquiry on simple machines.  If you have a pulley that we could borrow, we would be very appreciative.

*Please note that our classroom can be extremely cold due to an ongoing heating issue.  Please consider dressing your child in multiple layers to allow them to feel comfortable while playing indoors.

How you can support your child’s learning

•Talk about numbers.  Use lego blocks, cars, dolls, etc to show many ways that you can create a quantity.

•Play alphabet and word games to reinforce the skills that the children are learning at school.  Did you know it takes approximately 200-400 times of seeing a word before it become automatic?  That’s why our Stinger Readers have repetitive sentences.

Important Information

•We have a child in our class with a severe nut allergy.  (There are also several teachers and students in our school who have nut allergies).  Please ensure that you are sending nut free foods to school.  If your child consumes nuts, peanuts or peanut butter before coming to school, please ensure that they have brushed their teeth and washed their hands and face before coming to school.  “Wow Butter” and peanut butter alternatives will be not be permitted in the classroom.  Thank you for your cooperation in keeping school a safe place for all children.
