Notes about our Week

•We continued to read fiction and non-fiction books about apples.

•We used problem-solving skills to figure out how to get the apples out of the tree in our schoolyard.  Some of us shook the branches, jumped up or used a stick to get the apples down.  Once they were down, we examined the parts of the apple and some of us used them to paint.

•We painted trees with our fingers!

•We are learning about numbers.  We are learning to identify quantities and describe a group of objects using numbers.

•We visited Maple Crisp Apple Orchard.  We used our observation skills to complete a scavenger hunt and noticed many different kinds of apples.  We went on a wagon ride and picked our very own apple for a snack.

•We hiked along the Mill Race Trail.  We stopped in our story spot to read “A Tree Named Steve” and then picked our own special tree that we will watch how it changes throughout the school year.  We suggested names and took a vote to determine the name for our tree friend.  The winning name was “Batty.”

How you can support your child’s learning

•Your child has brought home a Stinger Reader.  These readers have been specially selected for your child’s ability.  Please read ask your child to read their book each night.

•If your child has a letter book, please read the letters as the sound.  Ask your child to identify the letter name and sound as they trace the letter on the cover.  Ask your child to point to the focus letter on each page (e.g., Show me where the __(letter c sound) is.). Ask them to use the pictures to help figure out what the word could be.  Draw their attention to the initial sound.

•If your child has a beginning reader, focus on the words that repeat throughout the book.  It is the repetition of these words that help children learn to read.  Please ask your child to point to the words as they read.  The unfamiliar word can be determined using the initial sound and the picture.

•If your child has a more advanced reader, they will be given instructions about what they need to do as they read.

Important Information

•We love volunteers!  If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, we would love to have a volunteer from 12-1:30 to read and play games with the children.  Please send an email if you are able and make sure that you have a valid police check that has been sent into the school office.

•We have a child in our class with a severe nut allergy.  (There are also several teachers and students in our school who have nut allergies).  Please ensure that you are sending nut free foods to school.  If your child consumes nuts, peanuts or peanut butter before coming to school, please ensure that they have brushed their teeth and washed their hands and face before coming to school.  “Wow Butter” and peanut butter alternatives will be not be permitted in the classroom.  Thank you for your cooperation in keeping school a safe place for all children.
