Students have been engaged in activities involving two-dimensional shapes. 2D shapes are flat.

They have sorted them according to attributes such as number of sides, number of vertices (points), types of sides (e.g., straight, curved), length of sides and colour.Β  They have created art with them, they have stamped with them to create scenes.Β  Students should be able to name circle, diamond, oval, rectangle, square, star and triangle. Some children are also able to recognize hexagon, octagon, trapezoid and rhombus.

Keep the learning going at home:

  • be a β€œShape Detective” and find 2D shapes in your home (e.g., A pizza is like a circle)
  • be a β€œShape Detective” and find 2D shapes in the community
  • ask children to tell you how they know something is a shape they identify (e.g., How do you know the sign is a rectangle?)
  • ask them to draw different shapes (e.g., Can you draw a rectangle?); if not draw one with a highlighter and have them trace it
  • look for shapes on clothing, signs and packages
