Hello Parents,

We have started our fractions unit. Some of the curriculum expectations we will be covering are:
• Equivalent fractions name the same number using different
denominators.
• Algorithms for adding and subtracting fractions require common
denominators.
• Estimation strategies for fractions focus on benchmarks such as onehalf and one whole.
• A fraction is an indicated division, and this can be used to find a
decimal representation.
• As for repeated addition of a whole number, repeated addition of a fraction can be represented as multiplication of the fraction by a whole number.
Learning Goals:
Understanding concepts
✔ Students understand how to use models to show the addition of fractions.
Applying procedures
✔ Students can choose the correct number line for adding fractions with different denominators.
Problem solving
✔ Students choose appropriate strategies to solve a problem.
Communicating
✔ Students can explain why their answer is appropriate.

Term 1 reports will be issued on Feb 16th. Some of you will be hearing from me regarding your child’s progress this week or next week via email or phone.
