Our third month of school is flying by! During this month, I enjoyed meeting with so many families to discuss our students’ progress. There is a lot of learning happening in room 11!

Our students did an amazing job leading The Toasty Toes campaign at Empire this year. Everyone in our class participated in the efforts through collecting socks around the school, doing school wide announcements, making posters, counting socks, graphing results, boxing up the donations, and finally by carrying out the boxed donations to the campaign manager’s vehicle. It was quite the effort and well worth it. We were tremendously proud to collect 1509 pairs of socks and beat last year’s donations!

During our Language time, we have been focusing on reading for meaning by making meaningful connections to the stories we hear and books we read. We have talked about how our personal experiences, books we have read, and our world knowledge can help deepen our understanding of stories. At home, you can support this by asking your child what the story reminds them of.  You can ask questions such as “how is this story/character similar to your life?” or “how is this story different from your life?” Next up, we will begin to explore nonfiction text features and be learning how to get information for our writing from books and other sources.

In Math, we are currently exploring Organizing and Collecting Data. Students have been learning about how to develop survey questions, how to organize data and how to read their results. We will be moving into 2-D shapes and angles within the coming month. Students are encouraged to keep practicing math facts at home. Some families have expressed interest in an online program called Xtra math. Information about how to access this website will be coming home this week.

We will be wrapping up our Forces and Movement science unit within the next two weeks. Next week we will review the main concepts and students will bring home a study guide for a short quiz that will be given in class. Our next topic will be focused on Strong and Stable Structures.

Our Social Studies inquiry is continuing with learning more about our First Nations communities. Students have chosen work groups and communities to research. They will be sharing their information with the class.

The office would like to remind everyone that all pizza orders are now to be submitted online through the School Day website. The due date for orders is December 13th.

As always, thank you for your continued support!
