Students in Room 14 will be starting a lengthy unit exploring addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division next week. In preparation for this unit I highly recommend that parents and guardians take time to practise basic math facts with their children – especially multiplication facts. Much of the unit will require students to use strategies (learned in class and their own) to solve problems involving one or more of the four operations. Although students are not required to use standard algorithms in their solutions, it is beneficial for them to know their math facts so that they may eventually move toward more efficient and complex strategies when solving problems. I’ve attached a handout that I provide students to assist them in learning their multiplication tables. I hope you find it useful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Students are also encouraged to visit the various online math sites I have provided links to on the right side of the Home Page under the Class Sites heading.
