Every year schools are required to carry out various drills (e.g., fire, tornado, intruder, bomb) to ensure that students and staff know what to do in case of emergencies. ย Before the drill happens, we talk to the students about what will happen (e.g., loud ringing bell) and what our jobs are. After the drill we talk about what went well and what we can do next time. At all steps students are reassured that they are safe and that there are adults to help.

This week we practiced two fire drills. ย Room 22 students did a great job of stopping what they were doing, getting in line, walking to our spot outside and waiting for the “all clear” bell.

October 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week. Consider having a fire drill at home. Here are some great resources to help get you started:
