French Home Reading

Students are strongly encouraged to read in French daily in order to increase their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation, fluency and confidence using a second language.

I understand that not all families speak French; however you can still support your child in many different ways.  Make reading in French a daily routine as your child will likely not choose to read in French on their own accord. Simply listening to your child read aloud in French and asking questions about what was read will help to maintain his or her interest.

There are many resources available online to assist with how to pronounce new or difficult words. Online dictionaries such as www.wordreference.com or www.larousse.fr/dictionnaires/francais-anglais  have audio features that will read out the word for you if you click on the icon.  You can also use these dictionaries to look up what the meaning of a new word is.

Students have been assigned a reading level that is slightly easier for them than the level they would read at in class so that students can work on their fluency, pronunciation and confidence without frustration.  Home reading is meant to be a pleasurable experience not a chore!

Students will have the chance to exchange their books on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays each week.  Students will be ready for a new book once they can accurately read all the words from their current book and when they have understood what they have read.  It is perfectly fine for a student to read the same book many times over throughout the week.

The more your child reads, the easier and more fun French will become!
