On Friday, November 11, also known as Remembrance Day, our school held two assemblies. As per the schedule on any assembly day, the first one was held from 8:20AM to 9:15AM, while the second one was held from 9:20AM to 10:15AM.

In the first assembly, the audience, or about half of the student body, was gathered in the cafeteria where some students held baskets of poppies – one per each person. To start off the assembly, four students gave an opening speech on the podiums where they described the purpose of Remembrance Day.

The assemblies had many meaningful components, like songs and poem-readings. Additionally, O Canada’s playing, and a speech and video acknowledging Indigenous people’s contributions also made the assembly memorable.

Other memorable moments include when our principal, Mr Wilson gave a few words on the importance of Remembrance Day. After this, a performance from Drama Club began about the experience of a front-line soldier, and the school choir sang. A video about the Black Battalion was also played which summarized the history, accomplishments, and legacy of Canadian soldiers.

Next, Flander Field was read which was followed by videos featuring the family members of Cameron Heights’ teachers and students who had served in the wars and Cameron Heights’ students describing what Remembrance Day means to them.

And last but not least, a moment of silence was held when the audience rose to face the Canadian flag.
