  • In Reading and Writing we will be reading and writing stories (with a focus on characters, setting, problem, solution and events). Later in the month we will be reading and writing poetry.
  • In Writing, we will also be learning about homophones (to, too, two, their, there, they’re) as well reviewing how to add endings to words (s, ed, ing).
  • In Reading, we are continuing to work on inferring to help us understand stories we have read.
  • In Science we will be discussing how animals and people hurt and help each other and we will be reviewing what we have learned this year.

May 2018

  • In Media we will be creating cereal boxes which show our understanding of tricks that the media use.
  • In Reading we will continue to answer question about our reading and will be working on retelling stories.
  • In Writing we are completing our unit on persuasive writing. We will begin doing some story writing later in the month.
  •  In Science we are very excited to watch our caterpillars as they change and grow. We will also be comparing the butterfly and frog life cycles.

April 2018

  • We will finishing up our animal reports and be presenting some of the information we’ve learned to the class.
  • In Reading, we will continue to answer questions about what we have read and discuss the author’s purpose and message.
  • In Writing, we will begin our persuasive writing unit. Children will need to come up with 3 reasons to support their argument.
  • In Media, we will learn about different kinds of media and tricks they use to persuade us.
  • In Science, we will learn about insects. Later in the month we will begin to talk about life cycles (human, butterfly and frog).

March 2018

  • Before the Berak: We are working on interviewing a friend, writing jot notes and writing a report about our friend. We are also learning to do research using non-fiction texts and to identify the features of non-fiction. In Science, we are learning about mammals.
  • After the Break: We will begin our big animal research projects. Students will select an animal and use books and online resources to learn about their animal. They will complete a chart using jot notes to organize what they have learned. Once they’re done their research, they will begin to write a report about their animal. I will help them edit their reports and they will make a good copy using many of the features on non-fiction texts that we have learned about. This project will be completed at school but children are welcome to bring information about their animal or library books to school.

February 2018

  • In Reading, we are focusing on reading non-fiction texts. We are learning about the features of non-fiction and how to use them to help us understand what we are reading. We are also learning to answer questions about what we have read.
  • In Writing, we are continuing to write procedures. A good procedure has: a title, materials, steps and a concluding sentence.
  • In Science, we have started our unit on Simple Machines (levers, pulleys, wheels, inclined plane, screws and wedges). The students are experimenting with the different machines as well as building some.

  • In Science we will be learning about floating and sinking. We will also be building boats in class. We will have a competition to see whose boat holds the most counters.

  • In Writing, we will continue to work on friendly letters.
  • In Science, we are learning about the properties of solids and liquids. We will be mixing liquids and learning about solids that dissolve in water as well as absorption. After the break we will discuss floating and sinking.
  • In Health, we are continuing to focus on the 4 food groups and choosing healthy snacks.

November 2017

  • In Reading we will continue to make personal connections to texts we’ve read to help us understand. We will also be identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution.
  • In Writing we will be working on organized friendly letters. We will also be continuing to work on recount writing.
  • In Science we will finish learning about Air and Birds and Reptiles. Later in the month, I hope to start our unit on Solids and Liquids.

  • In Oral Language, we will be learning to present our slideshow to the class.

They are reading a chapter book that has been teacher approved. After each chapter they complete a 2-3 word summary. At the end, they will make a mini book with their summaries. We will also continue to answer questions about our reading and discuss the Author’s Purpose (persuade, inform, entertain).

  • In Media, we will be learning about what media is, and about the target audience and its purpose (persuade, inform, entertain). We will also learn about tricks that advertisers use. We will use what we learn to create a cereal box for children.

April

  • We will be researching and writing reports on an animal that your child will select. Students will research their animal and use their notes to complete a rough draft of their report. With my support, they will edit their report and then write a good copy.  Their good copies should include the features of nonfiction texts that we have learned about – table of contents, headings, labels, captions, diagrams, facts… This project is connected to our science unit on animals and will be a part of their Reading, Writing and Media marks for term 2.

  • In Reading we have been working on demonstrating our understanding of texts that have been read to us by expressing our feelings and making connections to our personal lives. All students also read on-on-one with Mrs. Ohlhausen.
  • In Writing we continued to work on writing recounts.
  • In Word Work we have worked on short vowel sounds, ch, sh, the as well as long vowel sounds (when two vowels are together).
  • In Science we completed our water unit. We learned about the water cycle, why water is important and how to conserve and protect water.

Later this month we will begin to write stories.  Student stories should have characters, a setting, problem, solution and events.
  • In Science, we learning about the states of water (ice, water, vapour) and the water cycle. We are also learning about the importance of water to living things and how we can protect our water.

March

They are also writing about whether they liked or didn’t like the book.  We are focussing on giving details and explaining our thinking when answering these questions.
  • In writing we are composing friendly letters. Their letters should include the date, a greeting, closing and signature. The body of the letter should include at least 3-4 detail sentences as well as a question.
  • In Science we are finishing our animal unit. We are learning about how animals and people help each other. We will be creating a poster to show what we have learned.

November

  • In Reading we are retelling stories by identifying the Setting, Characters, Problem and Solution. Ask your child to do this when reading their Home Reading Books.

  • In Writing we are continuing to focus on writing good sentences and recounts.

  • In Science we are learning about the different animal groups (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, birds and fish).

October

June

  • In Reading and Writing we are looking at narratives (stories).  We have been learning about characters and character traits as well as discussing the problem, solution and events. Children have been writing little “mouse” storybooks about stories or topics of their choosing. They are also writing a story about “My Teacher’s Secret Life.”
  • Later this month, we will be reading and writing poetry. Your child is welcome to bring in a favourite poem to share with the class.

May

  • In Reading we are continuing to answer reading comprehension questions using complete sentences and proof from the text.
  • In Writing we are learning to write persuasive letters and paragraphs. Student writing should start with a position sentence, have 3 detailed reasons and end with a concluding sentence that reminds the reader about their position. Later this month we will begin to write stories.  Student stories should have characters, a setting, problem, solution and events.
  • In Media we are learning to think critically about what we see and hear. Students are learning about tricks that are used in advertisements to get us to buy products. They will then use what they have learned to create a cereal box that would appeal to children.
  • We will be finishing our Science unit on Simple Machines next week (My 5-12).

A summary of the “Mud Puddle” would look like this: Jule Ann wanted to play outside but a mud puddle kept jumping on her so she threw soap at it and it ran away. We are learning to summarize stories to show that we understand the stories we are reading.
  •  In Writing, we are finishing our paragraph writing unit and are hoping to start letter writing before the holidays.
  • In Science, the Grade 2s are researching ways that people can help animals and ways that animals help people.  The Grade 3s are researching ways that plants help people and ways people can help protect plants. Once their research is complete, students will create a poster to show what they have learned.

 

November

  • In Writing, we are focussing on writing good sentences. We will also be writing paragraphs.  A good paragraph starts with a topic sentence, has 3-4 supporting detail sentences and ends with a concluding sentence which reminds the reader about the topic.
  • In Science, we are continuing to learn about different animal groups.

October

  • Reading comprehension strategies help student to understand their reading. This month we will focus on visualizing, making connections and retelling stories.  When we visualize we are watching the story take place like a movie in our imagination. We use our five senses to help us do this. When making connections we think about how our reading reminds of us something that has happened in our own life or in another book.
  • In writing we will continue to write recounts.  A recount should start with a 5W sentence (who, what, where, when, why). We use words like first, then, next, after that and finally to organize our ideas.  We end our recount with a feeling sentence.
  • In Science the grade 2s will finish talking about the human, butterfly and frog life cyle. We will also discuss animal groups – mammals, fish, birds, insects, reptiles and amphibians.
