This year’s local theme is “I am a Refugee–What do you see?”

Join the community-wide celebration and recognition of World Refugee Day Waterloo Region June 1st to 29th, 2015. There will be a number of community events, exhibits and activities planned by our many partners – most events are free!

June 6th to June 14th

3rd Annual World Refugee Day Art Exhibit at THEMUSEUM,
10 King St West, 3rd floor, Kitchener

·         THEMUSEUM is partnering with Immigration Partnership and CCORIC for our third annual Refugee Art Show, which coincides with World Refugee Day in June 2015
·         The Refugee Art Show is being done in collaboration with other organization across Waterloo Region and will be held June 3 – 21st
·          All of the artwork has been created by local artists, and reflects this year’s theme:   “I am a refugee, what do you see?”

June 6th – 2 Events!

8 am to 2 pm Charity Garage Sale to help Syrians in need at 14 Melinda Street, Kitchener, ON N2E 0B8
· Please come out and visit ShamRose for Syrian Culture’s Charity Garage Sale!
· Still accepting items for sale!
· All proceeds will go to help Syrians in need through two grassroots relief groups working inside Syria, Atta and Lahfa.
· Any leftover items will either be used to support Syrian refugee families that are soon to arrive in Canada or donated to MCC’s Thrift on Kent in Kitchener!

5:30 – 8:30 pm Fundraising Supper for Syrian Relief at Waterloo North Mennonite Church, 100 Benjamin Road, Waterloo, ON
· Come and join us for a great dinner and stay for a program discussing ways of working together in community to help people impacted by current  conflicts in the world
· $15 admission and all funds raised will go to the Mennonite Central Committee’s international relief efforts

June 11th – 2 events!

9 – 10:15 am Stories from Refugees in Our Midst, Grand River Recreation Complex, 600 Heritage Dr., Kitchener
·         Discuss and explore  interfaith responses to Refugee issues and concerns with members of Interfaith Grand River
·         Open to the public

7 – 9 pm Syrian Refugees in Turkey, Conrad Grebel University, Room 1208, 140 Westmount Rd., North, Waterloo
·         Turkey’s strategic location has meant many people have sought refuge there – more than 1,000,000 Syrians have fled to Turkey and are living in camps and cities
·         Hear a Turkish perspective not always covered in western media
·         Organized by Intercultural Dialogue Institute KW Chapter in partnership with the Centre for Peace Advancement

June 13th – 2 events!

People on the Move: The Human Face of Migration Exhibit, Waterloo Region Museum, 10 Huron Road, Kitchener
·         Join us and explore the interactive exhibit about the journey of migrant people’s in our world, held  June 13th to the 17th
·         This exhibit raises awareness of the many stories of human migration – immigrants and refugees around the world.
·         Organized by the Mennonite Central Committee and the Waterloo Region Museum

12 – 7 pm Community Gathering and Picnic, Riverside Park, 49 King St., West, Cambridge
·         Join members of ShamRose for Syrian Culture in the picnic area for an afternoon of food, fun and conversation
·         ShamRose is a group  of volunteers committed to promote and celebrate Syrian culture and provide support to new immigrants

June 14th

2 – 5 pm Launch of People on the Move: Human Face of Migration Exhibit, Waterloo Region Museum, 10 Huron Rd, Kitchener
·         Hear personal stories from former people on the move from a number of countries will share their stories of displacement and subsequent resettlement in Canada
·         Refreshments provided

June 20th

10am-12pm: There will be a solidarity walk in downtown Kitchener from 10am-12:00pm on June 20th, starting at the Carizon Building at 400 Queen Street South.
