The purpose of this website is to provide information and communicate the happenings of 81 and 82. This website provides you with the opportunity to get a brief outlook of what is happening in the classroom. More detailed information, course content and updates can be located through my Twitter/Instagram accounts and through Google Classroom. 

HEALTH & SAFETY:

  • We will being our journey this year getting accustomed to the many protocols and procedures that will keep us safe while learning at William G. Davis. We will take some time to get to know each other and determine how we can best help each other be the best and safest version of ourselves.

READING:

  • We are learning to use a variety of reading comprehension strategies to help us better understand what we are reading. (Making Connections, Making Predictions, Visualizing, Summarizing, Determining the Main Idea, Synthesizing Text, Asking Questions etc.). Students will have many opportunities to read about what interests them and will demonstrate their understanding of the text they are reading by providing evidence of their reading comprehension strategies. 
  • We will dive into many pieces of Non-Fiction texts to better understand the world we live in!
  • Students are expected to have material to read EVERY DAY IN CLASS. This may be a novel, magazine, newspaper, etc.
  • Students will be asked to read a novel of their choice. We will be having book talks, reviews and presentations based on this novel.

WRITING:

  • We are learning about the writing process and the steps it takes to be a successful writer. We will focus on WORD CHOICE and VOICE as we consider a variety of ideas from our Writer’s Notebooks.  Students will have many opportunities to write about the things that interest them and will write a variety of reflective pieces. Students will learn about writing for a particular AUDIENCE, with a specific PURPOSE and FORMAT.
  • Students will be asked to publish a variety of reflective pieces of writing which may include the following [6 Word Memoir, Tweet Memoir and Personal Memoir].

ORAL COMMUNICATION & MEDIA:

  • Students will have the opportunity to share many of their ideas and creations. We will start by sharing our passion to help build our community of learning.

HISTORY:

  • We will be learning about how Canada has become the nation it is today. We will be studying the life and times of British North America prior to Confederation in 1867. We will be investigating important events and people throughout the mid to late 1800’s.
  • Students will develop an understanding of Confederation and how Canada was formed.
  • Students will have a choice to research a topic/person of interest to prepare a presentation for the class.
